Gableman changes his mind about that Rindfleisch appeal #JohnDoe #JohnDoeII #JohnDoe2
Get your day drinking on in Las Vegas this 4th of July
Oh say can you see — lots of cold, yummy drinks. It’s that time of year when everyone feels that patriotic urge to turn their cocktails red, white and blue and shoot off fireworks in their backyards like wildfires aren’t even a thing that exists. And even if you’re not from the good old USA, you can still celebrate our nation’s birthday the way we do – by partying like you’ll never have to explain your actions to your children when they see you on YouTube. To help everyone out, because that’s totally what the U.S. is all about, here are some of the best daytime party spots to enjoy yourself and the American way.
Adventure Club at Drai’s Rooftop Beach Club
Like a Roman Candle that comes blasting out all hot and bright, Adventure Club is a powerful force that’ll never knock you down. The duo drives home hard beats but always maintains a level of levity that leaves dancers feeling floored even when they’re jumping. When you throw them into a venue like Drai’s Beach Club, where sound hits the sun and you can see the Las Vegas Strip like it was made for you, the shots start firing even hotter. This is the party for all you fireballs who can’t wait to bounce across the ground and glow.
Skrillex at Encore Beach Club
Like a Spinner that’s always emitting as it whirls about the space, Skrillex has harnessed the spin and become something encompassing. A known name in the world of EDM, his talents for turning it all up have taken him high. And there are few places in Vegas with the posh space and scenic appeal to let him spin about the way he deserves. That’s why Encore Beach Club is the ideal locale for this artist, and one of the best spots to spend the day drenched and dancing. This is the party for everyone who can’t stay in one spot too long and needs to move and spin with the fun.
New World Punx at Foxtail Pool Club
Like a Wheel, fixed and busting under its own momentum, New World Punx know how to keep the music all around and inside your heart. The beat pumps and the melodies make you wonder if you’re finally not dizzy for the first time. At Foxtail Pool Club, where the best parts are slightly askew but everything looks forward to the stage, they’ll deliver a party that lasts as long as the beach balls bounce and the music can shoot from the speakers. This is the party for those who like solid sounds but never want to feel like they can’t let themselves get turnt.
Paris Hilton at Tao Beach Club
Like a Sparkler that glows and burns and leaves streaks in the air, Paris Hilton is a name that’s lit up pop culture for years. Moving through the ranks of socialites to her own brand of stardom, she’s become a name that transcends assumptions. When such a star is set into a pool club like Tao Beach, the synergy becomes endearing. The space is opulent and the set will be savvy as the secluded club gets shocked by the sound. This is the party for people who like to light up the room and never apologize for burning too bright.
Calvin Harris at Wet Republic
Like a Strobe that keeps flashing and never shows signs of a fade, Calvin Harris has turned himself into a hit machine that won’t stop lighting us until we’re gone. Between the beats come sentiments that never let us down and always land upon us like light. When Wet Republic is filled, it’s a place that pulls together everyone looking for a dip in water or to be dipped into someone on the dance floor. It’s the kind of pool club that can spice up the spectacle while still keeping its cool. And it’s the ideal place for an artist like Calvin Harris to deliver the sensual beats that have made him famous. This is the party for everyone with a warm heart looking to cool off by giving it up to someone special.
Other daytime parties
We know not everyone is the club type and the lines and the heat aren’t as appealing to every crowd. But Vegas is for everyone and July 4 is about bringing people together through the power of the party – and probably some historical stuff too. But we’re focused on the party part. If you’re not about the DJs but still want to let loose, here are some parties on the Strip to take you away.
Cabo Wabo Cantina
Like a Firecracker that never disappoints, Cabo Wabo Cantina is a spot for delicious food and all the drinks you can handle. The outdoor patio is hot – in the right ways – into the night. They’ll be offering a party atmosphere with drink specials and live music from Shawn Eiferman and Rein Garcia. The patio will also have amazing views of the fireworks that blaze across the Strip at night. While you’re there, be sure to grab a Fiesta Firework Daiquiri – because nothing says Independence Day like a red, white and blue cocktail. This is the party for everyone who likes the right kind of noise and would rather have a ton of fun with friends that push through a crowd of sweaty strangers.
Margaritaville
Like a Bottle Rocket that fires off just right every time, Margaritaville is always packed with patrons who just want to be free. The space has multiple patios, one right on the Strip in the Margaritaville 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar, and another on the third floor which will give a beautiful view of the fireworks. There’s still time to buy space for the viewing party, which will include an open call brand bar and heavy appetizers as well as guaranteed seating. This is the party for anyone who’s ever felt like taking a rocket ride but was always just a little too intent on holding on to their drink.

Shake Shack
Where: New York – New York Hotel and Casino
When: July 2 – 5
First, let’s talk about food because obviously one of the most American things one can do is eat hot dogs and stuff. There are hundreds of different restaurants here in Vegas but we have decided to list just one: Shake Shack. Why? They serve delicious burgers and milkshakes and that’s all the reason we need. Oh, and if the mention of juicy burgers and indulgent milkshakes hasn’t convinced you yet, maybe the mention of a great deal will. For the days of July 2 – 5 only, Shake Shack is offering special deals on their corn dogs and blueberry pies and beginning July 2, the eatery will set their specialty peach lemonade free to the world. Who knew independence could taste so good?
Tower Party at the Stratosphere
Where: Stratosphere Hotel and Casino
When: July 4
These days, fifty bucks doesn’t stretch very far but here in Vegas, if you are smart with your moolah, there is actually a whole lotta stretching to be had. This weekend, instead of feeding the slot machines all of your dough, pocket some cash and buy yourself an experience instead. For $29.99 ($14.99, if you’re a hotel guest), you can get yourself a hot ticket into the Tower Party at the Stratosphere for the Fourth. Believe us, there are few better places in Vegas to catch the Fourth of July fireworks lighting up the Sin City skyline than from the 108th and 109th floors of the 1,149-foot structure. Not only will your ticket get you into the party, but you will also get two free drinks from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Tyga at Drai’s
Where: Drai’s Beachclub – Nightclub
When: July 5
For those of you concert enthusiasts out there, you’re in luck. This weekend is an epic time for our already awesome music scene and among the many concerts taking place this week, rap superstar Tyga will be kicking off his residency at Drai’s Beachclub – Nightclub at The Cromwell on July 5th. Performing atop the club’s 65,000-square-foot rooftop, fans will be partying poolside all night long with this rap icon. What is also cool about Drai’s is that guests have one of the best views of the city once they are on the roof. What better way to celebrate your freedom than feeling like you’re on top of the world while rocking out to “Rack City?”
Kenny Chesney at The Joint
Where: Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
When: July 3 – 4
Do you relate more to the red solo cup crowd? Well heck, get yer boots on and celebrate ‘Merica the way it should be celebrated…. with booze and country music. He may be known to fly a pirate flag but country megastar Kenny Chesney sure as hell knows how to throw a damn good Fourth of July party with his “Big Revival” concert tour. Performing at The Joint inside of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Chesney is returning to Vegas this weekend for the second time on his Big Revival tour. Performing on July 3rd and 4th, let us tell you from firsthand experience that this is one show that you will not want to miss.
Body English Closing Party
Where: Body English Nightclub
When: July 3
When things close here in Vegas it’s a toss up of emotions. Of course we are sad for whatever is closing, but we can’t help but be pumped on the fact that a crazy blowout party is about to go down. Yes, we celebrate everything possible, even closings. This weekend, Body English at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino will be hosting an epic closing party with Dee Jay Silver. Getting us all into party mode for the Fourth, the club will be popping on the 3rd until the wee hours of the night until they kick everyone out for good. Let’s just say that like any closing party, drinks are usually stronger, the dance floor is typically hotter, and overall, it’s one hell of a good time.

The Division: Tense Multiplayer in the Dark Zone
First revealed at E3 2013, Tom Clancy’s The Division introduced us to a post-apocalyptic vision of New York City realized in jaw-dropping detail.
Bringing Ubisoft’s vision of a post-pandemic urban battleground to life isn’t a task that the development team are keen to rush, so at E3 2015 there were still plenty of details to be unveiled — and this year was the turn of the Dark Zone.
This in-game PvP realm invites players to take on a variety of missions either as a team, a lone wolf or — as Executive Producer Fred Rundqvist told me — as a rogue agent hell-bent on securing the Dark Zone’s extra-special loot drops all for themselves.
“Essentially, the Dark Zone is a lawless area where you can go rogue, steal other people’s loot, and potentially betray your own teammates,” Fred explains.
As the hands-on demo from the E3 show floor demonstrated, patrolling the Dark Zone is a nervy, tense experience where you’re never quite sure who to trust — whether that’s other player-controlled squads, or members of your own team. But as with much of The Division, your experience and how you choose to play needn’t be restricted by how many friends — from your PSN list, match-made or met in-game — are also playing.
“You can play on your own, absolutely, or as part of a team,” Fred says. “If you want to play alongside others, you can hook up with people inside the game world and form a group, or go through matchmaking and start as part of a team. If you’re playing solo you won’t get totally overwhelmed — enemies scale to give a challenge to just one person or to a larger team.”
So those fears that The Division can only be enjoyable with the level of tactics and comms that we’ve seen in the trailers can be put to one side.
As Fred explains; “It’ll be your choice to work with other players, or against them. The Division is a loot and progression driven game, so the main reason to engage another player in combat within the Dark Zone is to take the loot that they’re carrying and use it for yourself.”
Tempting as that may be, greed can easily get the better of you. “By doing that, you’re taking a fairly large risk. As soon as you’re openly hostile to another player, you’ve gone rogue and you’ll be flagged to all the other agents in the area. If they take you out, they’ll gain an extra bounty that’s placed on rogue agents, earn extra XP, and can pick up whatever it was that you stole.
“So the game is more balanced than just being a free-for-all — you have you decide if it’s worth it, who you’ll be up against, and the strength of your team before you go rogue and engage another player.”
How you approach life in the Dark Zone, and outside in the wider world of The Division, is likely to depend on how you want to play the game. But, as Fred explains, you won’t find yourself locked in to a specific class, loadout or speciality.
“We like to think of The Division as a ‘classless’ game — you’ll unlock skills and talents as you level up and then you can specialize in a specific path. Or you can try to follow them all and level up that way and switch between them,” he says.
“Most people have a preferred playing style, whether you’re the supporting medic, the long range sniper, or if you want to go in aggressively and deal a lot of damage. To me, that’s the beauty of The Division — it’s an evolution of traditional RPGs.”

Topalov wins Norway 2015!
The first event of the Grand Chess Tour has finished with the old guard still showing that they are a viable force. Veselin Topalov and Viswanathan Anand drew their last round encounter giving them both 1st and 2nd place in the first leg of the new elite event.
Topalov had a fortuitous start with a won over Magnus Carlsen who was unaware of the time control and flagged. This apparently affected the world champion as he dropped another game in the second round to nemesis Fabiano Caruana. After compiling only 1/2-point in the first four rounds, the chess world was in total shock. Meanwhile Topalov, Anand and Hikaru Nakamura were in solid form.
Viswanathan Anand congratulates Topalov after making 18-move draw.
Criticism from fans and commentators was swift.
What is interesting about this tournament was the fact that the two oldest competitors ran the tables and proved that they could still play steadily against top competition. On the other hand, top seeds Carlsen and Caruana struggled mightily. Caruana made a number of uncharacteristic blunders including the 40…g5?? blunder against Nakamura and a gross misjudgment against Levon Aronian.
Carunana finished on -1 and has been in a bit of a free fall on the Elo list tumbling from his perch of 2851 reached last October. Carlsen has also hemorrhaged points losing 23 points in this tournament alone. The champion had a chance to draw even in the last round but was beaten soundly by tail-ender and compatriot Jon Ludwig Hammer.
Carlsen close to resigning against Hammer.
It is with a certainty that future championship matches will not be played in Norway as long as Carlsen is the champion. He simply does not perform well on his home turf. It is possible that he will have to defend his title in the U.S. against an American! Nevertheless, Carlsen has two more events and will return to the U.S. to play in the Sinquefield Cup in August.
There were no breakout performances this year and the result was in doubt all the way until the 8th round when Nakamura failed to convert an advantage against Alexander Grischuk. After that, Topalov moved to 1.5 points ahead of Nakamura and meant either he or Anand would score the victory regardless of the result. Despite barely missing a chance to vie for 1st place, the top American was pleased with his play and builds on his outstanding year. He is now at a career high Elo of 2814.
These five battled at 2014 Sinquefield and will return in August!
Topalov was ecstatic and admitted to being the recipient of great fortune in a few of his games. However, he stated in an interview that it is very difficult to maintain the focus of 20 years ago and that he was pleasantly surprised at his performance. Both he and Anand seemed to be supportive of each other in these observations. However, Anand is playing better than he has during his champion years… which is bad news for the rising stars. We will certainly see if the field (and possibly Wesley So) will come to St. Louis with vengeance in their hearts.

10 of the Best Las Vegas Chandeliers
They’re glittery. They’re glamorous. They’re excellent for staring at while you stroll through a casino right before you slam into a slot machine because you weren’t looking where you were going. In a city with this many lights, you’d better believe we know how to make a ceiling shine. These are a few of our favorites. Be sure to stop walking while you look at them. Safety first and all that.
The Chandelier bar
Starting off strong with something that’s not even really a chandelier, The Chandelier Bar at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas is a bar that’s designed to resemble a giant chandelier. Like many bars that are made to resemble giant chandeliers – you know, that totally common thing – this spot has three levels that each bring out a different shade of the sheen. But no matter where you sit, you get to feel like you’ve been draped in diamonds as the shimmery strands dangle all around you. It’s really the closest you can get to actually being a chandelier without raiding Lady Gaga’s closet and duct taping yourself to the ceiling fan. Even if you did that, you would not make this list.
Omnia
This one’s pretty much raised the bar for all chandeliers everywhere. Actually, it’s raised like five bars. And those bars are circular. Omnia at Caesars Palace boasts a huge, circular chandelier with multiple sections that rise up and down. They’re all covered in lights and they do different configurations. It’s exactly what would happen if the aliens from Close Encounters helped design a nightclub. DJs, that’s your cue to do a dubstep remix of that song that goes bowm, bowm, bowm, bowm, boooowm. Plus, this incredible chandelier is right here in Vegas, so you don’t have to drive all the way to Devil’s Tower.
Bellagio
They’re the perfect thing to look at when you’re waiting to check into the Bellagio and you just have to look away from your dad’s socks/sandals combo. Created by famed artist Dale Chihuly, Fiori di Como, which roughly translates to “those bright flowery umbrella-like things at the Bellagio,” is one of the most colorful and vibrant pieces in the already beautiful Bellagio. And it’s just steps away from the always lovely Bellagio Conservatory. So once you’ve finally got your room key and your dad has put his flip phone back in his leather fanny pack, you can keep the aesthetics rolling throughout your stay.
Planet Hollywood
Spheres play powerful roles in this universe. The Earth is a sphere. The sun is a sphere. The Death Star was a sphere. Sure, that last one didn’t work out so well for Alderaan. Consequently, Alderaan is no longer a sphere. But one sphere that is intact and still beautiful is the sphere chandelier at Planet Hollywood. It casts a glow over the escalators and adds a bit of brilliance to the casino. It may seem like a simple design, but the precision that goes into making such a piece is emblematic of the dedication that’s gone into making the Las Vegas Strip. Sorry to get sentimental. We’re still not over Alderaan.
BLVD. Cocktail Company
We’re not actually sure what it is, or why it is, or where it came from. But we’re glad this glowing glob that packing peanuts probably pray to is around. BLVD. Cocktail Company was created by the same people who brought us Park on Fremont and Commonwealth. With their addition to the LINQ Promenade, they’ve gone dapper and daring all at the same time. The dapper part comes in the overall aesthetic and swagger of the place. The daring is in the assumption that the chandelier won’t one day hatch and release a swarm of hipsters who fly up to you and say, “I’d bite you, but biting is so over.” That would, of course, be an awesome thing to see, but then we’d have to replace an entry on this blog and we don’t want to do that.
Center Bar at SLS
We pretty much tossed out the traditional definition of a chandelier a long time ago. And SLS is a property that kind of tosses out traditional definitions all the time. So it works. The chandelier at the Center Bar at SLS is already much more than a casino bar. It’s got a swell little seating area and feels right at home in the industrial-inspired SLS. But when that chandelier starts glowing, swirling and displaying a face that might just be Bacchus, the god of wine (it’s probably not, but we can dream) you’ll definitely take notice. Just hope you haven’t had a few too many by that point. We… may have had an awkward conversation with that face about whether or not we could/should chug a bottle of Merlot. No one won that night.
Parasol Down
Most chandeliers require you to look up. They like that. If you didn’t know, chandeliers totally get off on people straining their necks. But Parasol Down at Wynn has bred a kinder, gentler form of chandelier that doesn’t mind being adored from the main floor of the casino. That actually works out really well since Parasol Down is set one story below the casino level. The chandeliers feel like they could only work in the Wynn, or maybe in a circus clown’s fever dream, but they bring a playfulness to the otherwise grand and elegant Wynn that makes Parasol Down and Up feel like a special place to let yourself indulge in some silliness – silliness like anthropomorphizing chandeliers for comedic effect.
Wicked Spoon
We weren’t sure at first if the chandeliers at Wicked Spoon at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas were meant to look like fish. Then we heard that that was the inspiration. We also think they look a little bit like what would happen if you tried to deep fry a slinky. But that’s probably just because of our new restaurant idea where we deep fry people’s childhood toys. The playdough turned out good, but the teddy bear was an abomination. Thankfully they don’t serve any of our food at Wicked Spoon. Instead they go with a spectacular spread of delicious dishes you can enjoy in between glances at the ceiling. We’re actually staring at that picture right now and getting really hungry.
Encore Lobby Bar
The Lobby Bar at Encore is one of those places we wish we could just live. Put a bed in the corner and a laptop on the bar and we’re in heaven. One of the pieces that makes it so distinctive is the statue of Daphne. We’ve written about her before, but what we didn’t mention was the laurel tree-inspired chandelier that hangs over her or the similar piece that hangs above the bar. It’s the kind of thing that makes us believe that in the wee hours of the night, if you’re very quiet, and if you truly believe, you can hear the pitter-patter of the laurel elves that refill all the bottles with delicious booze. And that’s totally the reason we’re going with for why we spent 37 hours drinking at Encore Lobby Bar. Plus it’s just a really great bar and we like drinking there.
Red Rock Resort Lobby Bar
That just leaves us with the biggie. At Red Rock Resort on the west side of the city, the Lobby Bar boasts a chandelier as impressive as the mountain views of Las Vegas. It’s 32 feet long. That’s six Kevin Harts. And it’s made of Swarovski crystals. There’s a legend – that we totally just made up right now – that the chandelier is actually the earring of giant with fantastic taste in jewelry. She lost it one day and it rolled down the mountain where some designers grabbed it and put it up. That’s just a little something to think about when you’re checking out the chandelier from every angle. You really don’t want to know what designers in Sin City ended up doing with that giant’s belly button ring.
