Break out of your comfort zone on your outdoor spring break

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd">

Everyone loves spring break. Especially college students and anyone else still in school. It's a great time to relax and regroup before making the final haul towards summer, and spring is also the perfect time to get outdoors after a long, cold winter. (Readers in the Midwest and Northeast know what I’m talking about).

If you don’t get a traditional spring break, this time of year is still a great time to schedule a few days of vacation (or even call in sick…allergies are bad this time of year after all) and get outside. An outdoor spring break is the absolute perfect way to shake off the last of those wintertime blues and get ready for the warmth and sunshine of another summer.

In fact, I have a spring break challenge for you this year. I challenge you to get outside of your comfort zone (it doesn’t have to be too far) and do an outdoor spring break activity that is new to you. Much too often we fall into the trap of planning to do something new and fun during our limited free time and then wind up staying inside or having the plans fall through. Life happens and I get that, but this year, try and make a commitment to something new.

We all have something in our heads that we have always wanted to do or try and never have for one reason or another. Well, let’s all try and change that in 2015. Here are a few ideas for a new and exciting outdoor spring break experience.

Paddle Boarding

Paddle boarding has quickly become one of the most popular water sports in the country. It seemingly came out of nowhere, but people truly love it. This is a great activity to tackle on your outdoors spring break for several reasons. It’s a good way to get some exercise while enjoying the water and it isn’t too challenging for beginners. Of course, your spring break destination will have to be a warmer one to indulge in paddle boarding (San Diego's Mission Bay Aquatic Center or Biscayne National Park in the Florida Keys are great places to start), but it is definitely worth a try over the summer as well. Rental paddle boards are easy to come across and most places that rent them will usually offer lessons as well.

Water Jet Pack

For those of you with more extreme tastes, trying out a water jet pack is definitely one way to go. All you have to do is watch a few seconds of that video to see how much fun giving one of those a whirl would be. Propelling yourself across the water is starting to grow in popularity, and although that kind of thrill seeking at Hawaii's beautiful Waimea Bay Beach Park isn’t something that's likely to turn into a hobby, it would definitely be one outdoor spring break activity that you'd never forget.

Geocaching

If you have never given geocaching a try (or even ever heard of it), it would make a great new experience for your outdoor spring break challenge. Simply put, geocaching is like a treasure hunt. You follow GPS coordinates to a hidden cache of stuff. The cache is usually a waterproof container with a log book and pen so you can see who found the cache before you and add your own name to the list. Sometimes the cache may be a larger container with small trinkets which you can take as long as you put something of your own in the cache in exchange.

Geocaching is a great way to get out in the woods, explore new areas, and have a goal to achieve. Just make sure to strap on your boots since the spring woods in many areas are typically very muddy in the spring!

Don’t let my suggestions in this article limit what you choose to do on your upcoming outdoor spring break. They are just that…suggestions. Do something that you enjoy or that you like to do and your spring break will have been a success. Fly a kite, plant some flowers, heck…just go on a drive or bike ride in a direction you don’t often go.

An outdoor spring break is only successful if you get outdoors. So get out there and enjoy your time off from your normal everyday life. Start planning your spring break and get great ideas for new activities at Roadtrippers today!
