From surfers to hippies to today’s hipsters, the VW bus is still the classic road trip vessel of choice… a beloved symbol of our wanderlust. The bummer? A classic VW bus won’t hold more than a handful of your best friends, but what if you had a beautiful VW bus that could hold a dozen freaking people? Here’s your chance… Meet the world’s only 1965 Volkswagen stretch microbus.
Built by respected VW restoration shop in SoCal, this 33 window creation has been used as a party limousine in Maui, HI since its completion and holds a whopping 12 passengers.
If you’ve ever road tripped in a VW bus, we know the question you’re thinking. “How the hell does this thing move with 12 passengers in it?” Well, apparently they’ve juiced the normally puny VW bus motor to make it work for the extra weight:
The bus is powered by a VW 2074cc engine that is a bullet-proof torque monster, with dual port, single carburetor, and custom modified venture. As part of the PUC licensing, the bus had to be weighed…it came in at just under 3900 lbs. The custom engine moves this bus very effectively, even with a load of 12 passengers. The bus was driven from San Diego to the port of Long Beach at 65mph and it had some pedal left (top speed here in Maui is only 55mph).
The van has a mere 1,600 miles on it since it was restored or created or whatever the hell you say was done to it in Southern California. Needless to say, it’s absolutely beautiful, restored and finished with the very highest quality parts, none of that “Chinese junk,” as the seller so eloquently states. The color is unique to VW buses as well- 1957 Chevy tropical turquoise and India ivory. The color works, wouldn’t you say?
The buyer of this bizarre and beautiful bus has a few options with the purchase too… First, the sale includes the limo company for which the bus was used, Endless Summer. (Even includes Tommy Bahama drivers’ uniforms. Score!) According to the seller, the company is already booking well into 2015 since Maui is the #1 destination wedding spot in the world. Family issues forcing the family back to the mainland, not business problems, are forcing the sale of the VW bus and accompanying business.
Second, the buyer could ship her back to the mainland and cruise the country in it… The van and company are listed for $220,000, but the owner will consider selling you JUST the van for a little less dough if you don’t want to run a Maui limo company. In case you’re wondering, it’ll cost you another $1,100 to ship the van to Long Beach, California.
So for all of our wealthy traveler friends out there… Please, one of you buy this and let us come cruise with you. Please. Pls.
