Road trip up the Oregonian coast

Looking for a coastal drive without the crowds and tourist traps of California's Rte. 1? Consider Oregon, with miles and miles of coastline, dunes and national parks. Start in northern California and head north for a beautiful scenic drive and lots of natural wonders to see along the way.

What to see: Trinidad State Beach is an amazing beach with lots of trails, tide pools, and offshore rocks that are part of the California Coastal National Monument.  If you want a hike, head to the Tall Trees Grove to see the one of the tallest living trees in existence (there are taller trees, but their locations have been kept secret).  Or if you prefer to explore Redwood Country via automobile, check out the Tour-Thru Tree .  Farther north is Harris Beach State Park, one of the most scenic beaches in Oregon.  Or keep heading north and rent a dune buggy to explore the coast, dunes, and rivers.

Where to stay:  The Historic Requa Inn in Klemath, CA, is located right in the heart of California's Redwoods.  The beautiful scenery, home-cooked meals, and central location make it a great home base while you're exploring the area.  Farther north is the Tu Tu' Tun Lodge, if you're in the mood for luxurious living.  The fabulous rooms and spa services will have you wondering why you should get back in the car.  At the end of your trip is the Gardiner Guest House, a Victorian B&B with a quiet, restful charm that will get you ready to make the return trip home again.

Where to eat:  Stop for fish and chips at the Crazy Norwegians, or indulge in one of the many other seafood establishments along the way.  Or if you prefer to catch your own meal, the Charleston Crab House will clean and cook it for you.

What places did I leave out?
